Best Cheap Paper Shredder for Home Use

A cheap shredder is fine for a few envelopes a week if it is still rated P-3 or P-4: our top budget pick is the Bonsen S3101, which Bob Vila chose as its best shredder for home use. Budget machines save money by cutting run time and bin size, not usually security, so match one to how little you shred.

In detail

Who each one suits

Specifications are each brand’s own; notes draw on manufacturers’ manuals and independent reviews. We have not tested or used these shredders ourselves.

Best budget overall#1

Bonsen S3101 8-Sheet Cross-Cut

Bob Vila picked this small Bonsen as its best shredder for home use: an 8-sheet P-4 cross-cut that sits on a 4-gallon basket and is only about 7.5 inches deep. It is a Budget-tier machine for mail and bills.

Why it stands out

  • P-4 cross-cut (brand-stated) at a Budget-tier price.
  • Takes credit cards, staples and clips.
  • Under 9 lb and about 7.5 inches deep.
Cut & securityCross-cut, P-4 per Bonsen
Sheets per pass8 sheets
Run time5 min on, 40 min rest
Bin4 gal, lift-off head
ShredsPaper, cards, staples, clips

Good fit if

  • You shred mail and bills a few at a time.
  • You want something small enough to live under a desk.

Skip it if

  • You want a pull-out bin: you lift the head off to empty it.
  • You shred long sessions: Bob Vila saw it overheat after 7 to 9 minutes.

Bonsen’s page gives two noise figures (60 dB and 70 dB) and two cut sizes, so treat both as approximate.

Best budget micro-cut#2

Aurora AU870MA 8-Sheet Micro-Cut

A slim, Budget-tier micro-cut shredder for light use. At about 7 inches deep it tucks under a desk, and Aurora still rates it P-4 with 4 x 12 mm particles, which is unusual at this price.

Why it stands out

  • P-4 micro-cut at a Budget-tier price.
  • Slim body, about 7.1 inches deep and under 12 lb.
  • Takes credit cards, staples and small paper clips; 5-year cutter warranty from Aurora.
Cut & securityMicro-cut, P-4 (4 x 12 mm)

Run timeAbout 5 min
Bin3.9 gal, lift-off head
ShredsPaper, cards, staples, small clips

Good fit if

  • You shred a handful of envelopes at a time.
  • You live in a small apartment or dorm.

Skip it if

  • You shred for more than about five minutes at a time.
  • You dislike lifting the cutting head to empty the bin — there is no pull-out bin.
  • You shred CDs.
Best budget from a big brand#3

GBC ShredMaster PX08-04

A light, simple cross-cut shredder for occasional junk mail and bills. It is the cheapest name-brand option we cover, but GBC rates it P-3, and it runs only about three minutes at a time.

Why it stands out

  • Light at 7.7 lb and small.
  • Takes staples and paper clips.
  • 2-year warranty from GBC.
Cut & securityCross-cut, P-3 (4 x 44.5 mm)
Sheets per pass8 sheets
Run timeAbout 3 min
Bin4 gal
ShredsPaper, staples, clips

Good fit if

  • You shred a few sheets a week.
  • Budget and size matter more than security level.

Skip it if

  • You want P-4 security or credit-card shredding — GBC lists neither.
  • You shred for more than a few minutes.

HP AF809 Auto Feed

The most affordable auto-feed machine we cover. HP’s US licensee lists an 80-sheet tray and a 9-sheet manual slot, and Popular Mechanics named it best affordable auto-feed.

Why it stands out

  • 80-sheet auto-feed at a Mid-range price.
  • Micro-cut, 4.3 x 12 mm.
  • Compact, under 17 inches tall.
Cut & securityMicro-cut (4.3 x 12 mm)
Sheets per pass80 auto-feed, 9 by hand
Run time10 min on, 40 min rest
Bin3.8 gal
ShredsPaper, cards, staples

Good fit if

  • You want hands-off shredding on a tighter budget.
  • Your batches are modest.

Skip it if

  • You fill the tray often: Popular Mechanics found the 3.8-gallon bin full at about 50 of 80 sheets.
  • You want long sessions (10 minutes on, 40 off) or a quiet machine (68 dB, brand-stated).

Only shred a little mail?

A Budget-tier shredder is enough. Spend more only when you shred often or in long sessions.

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Do not overfeed

Bob Vila jammed the Bonsen at 9 sheets and the AU870MA at 12. Budget machines punish overloading, so feed a few sheets less than the rating.

02

Respect the cool-down

Bonsen lists a 40-minute rest after five minutes of running for the S3101, and Fellowes 30 minutes for the LX41. Plan short sessions instead of fighting the thermal cut-out.

03

Use free shred days for backlogs

For a one-off clear-out, the FTC suggests a local shred day, and AARP and BBB events usually accept about three boxes free.

Honest note

Cheap shredders are built for light use. Expect runs of 3 to 5 minutes, small 4-gallon baskets and lift-off heads. If you shred more than a few minutes a week, a Mid-range machine such as the Bonsaii C169-B is usually the better long-term buy.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is a cheap paper shredder worth it?

Yes, if you shred a little mail regularly. The budget models here are still rated P-3 or P-4 by their brands. The compromise is short run times and small bins, not security.

What is the best cheap shredder for credit cards?

The Bonsen S3101 and Aurora AU870MA both list credit cards. GBC does not list them for the PX08-04, so skip it if you shred old cards.

How long do cheap shredders last?

We found no independent data. HSM, a shredder maker, says most shredders last 5 to 10 years depending on use and maintenance. Warranties hint at build quality: Aurora gives the AU870MA’s cutters five years.

Are cheap shredders P-4?

Some are. Aurora rates the AU870MA P-4 micro-cut and Bonsen rates the S3101 P-4 cross-cut. GBC rates the PX08-04 P-3, which CHOICE still treats as the minimum to aim for.

Is it cheaper to use a shredding service?

For one big clear-out, often. Shred Nations puts drop-off shredding at about $1 to $1.50 a pound, and a banker’s box holds about 30 pounds. For weekly mail, a budget shredder pays for itself in convenience.

Do cheap shredders need oil?

Cross-cut and micro-cut cutters benefit from oil or lubricant sheets whatever the price. Follow the manual; Aurora’s range from monthly oiling to lubricant sheets. Never use an aerosol.
