Best Cross-Cut Paper Shredder for Home Use

For most household paper, a P-4 cross-cut shredder is a sensible balance of security, capacity and price: our top pick is the Bonsaii EverShred C169-B, with 15 sheets per pass and a 40-minute run time. Cross-cut chops each strip into short pieces, a few hundred per page, while taking more sheets at once than most micro-cut machines.

Specifications are each brand’s own; notes draw on manufacturers’ manuals and independent reviews. We have not tested or used these shredders ourselves.

Best cross-cut overall#1

Bonsaii EverShred C169-B

A value cross-cut machine for busy home offices: Bonsaii rates it for 15 sheets at a time and 40 minutes of running before a 40-minute rest, with a 5-gallon pull-out bin. It is the long-session choice at a Mid-range price if cross-cut is secure enough for you.

Why it stands out

  • 15-sheet cross-cut feed, rated P-4 by Bonsaii.
  • 40-minute run time, longer than most home shredders at this price.
  • Takes CDs, credit cards, staples and clips; brand-stated noise of 60 dB.

Bin5 gal, pull-out
ShredsPaper, cards, CDs, staples, clips

Good fit if

  • You shred in long sessions and want fewer stops.
  • P-4 cross-cut is enough for your household paper.
  • You want a pull-out bin and casters at a mid price.

Skip it if

  • You want micro-cut particles — this is cross-cut.
  • You need a quick restart: after a full 40-minute session it needs a 40-minute rest.
  • You dislike vague controls: CNN Underscored noted one red light covers power, overload and overheat.

Bonsaii now sells this as the 15-sheet upgrade; some older reviews describe a 14-sheet version.

Best quiet cross-cut#2

Fellowes Powershred 79Ci

The Powershred 79Ci is the long-running favorite of shredder roundups, including TechRadar’s best overall pick. Fellowes builds it around its “100% Jam Proof” system and SafeSense, and rates it at 54 dB, the lowest brand-stated figure among the shredders we cover.

Why it stands out

  • 16-sheet P-4 cross-cut that also takes CDs, cards, staples and small clips.
  • SafeSense stops the cutters when hands touch the paper opening; it is sold with Fellowes’ “100% Jam Proof” system.
  • Brand-stated 54 dB, and a sleep mode that shuts down after two minutes idle.

Run time20 min on, 30 min rest
Bin6 gal
ShredsPaper, cards, CDs, staples, small clips

Good fit if

  • Noise matters: you shred near a sleeping baby or during calls.
  • You want a well-known machine with long-standing editorial support.
  • Children or pets share the room and you want a touch sensor at the slot.

Skip it if

  • Price matters most — it sits in the Premium tier.
  • You want micro-cut: TechRadar notes it stops at P-4.
  • You often feed full stacks: TechGearLab managed 14 sheets, not the rated 16.

Fellowes’ warranty terms for the 79Ci differ between documents and regions, so check the warranty listed on the product page you buy from.

Best heavy-duty cross-cut#3

Bonsaii EverShred C149-C

For big clear-outs by hand, the C149-C pairs an 18-sheet feed with the longest run time here: Bonsaii lists 60 minutes before a 10-minute rest, and a 6-gallon pull-out bin on casters. Bob Vila picked it as its heavy-duty choice.

Why it stands out

  • 18 sheets per pass, the most of any hand-fed shredder we cover.
  • 60 minutes on, 10 minutes off, so long sessions keep moving.
  • Shreds CDs, cards, staples and small clips; brand-stated 62 dB.
Cut & securityCross-cut, P-4 per Bonsaii
Sheets per pass18 sheets
Run time60 min on, 10 min rest
Bin6 gal, pull-out
ShredsPaper, cards, CDs, staples, small clips

Good fit if

  • You are clearing years of tax and estate paperwork.
  • You shred for an hour at a time and hate waiting for cool-downs.

Skip it if

  • You want certainty on the security level: Bonsaii says P-4, TechRadar says it misses P-4, and Bonsaii’s own page lists two different cut sizes.
  • Space is tight: it stands about 21.5 inches tall.

Bob Vila reports the bin has to be pushed fully home or the motor won’t run, a safety interlock rather than a fault.

Fellowes Powershred 99Ci

The bigger sibling of the 79Ci: 18 sheets, a 30-minute run time and a 9-gallon bin, with the same jam-proof system and SafeSense. Fellowes rates it at 56 dB and for shared use by one to three people.

Why it stands out

  • 18-sheet P-4 cross-cut that also takes CDs, cards, staples and clips.

GBC ShredMaster PX08-04

Why it stands out

  • Light at 7.7 lb and small.
  • Takes staples and paper clips.
  • 2-year warranty from GBC.

  • Budget and size matter more than security level.

Skip it if

  • You want P-4 security or credit-card shredding — GBC lists neither.
  • You shred for more than a few minutes.

Want capacity and decent security?

A P-4 cross-cut machine takes more sheets per pass than most micro-cut models and suits everyday household paper.

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Look for P-4, not just “cross-cut”

Fellowes groups cross-cut at P-3 to P-4, and GBC’s PX08-04 is P-3. If the level matters to you, check it for the exact model.

02

Expect a fuller bin

Cross-cut pieces pack less densely than micro-cut particles, so a cross-cut bin fills faster per sheet.

03

Step up for sensitive records

For medical or legal paperwork, HSM puts P-5 at information that must stay secret. See our micro-cut picks for that.

Honest note

Cross-cut is less secure than micro-cut: Staples counts about 400 pieces per page for cross-cut against several thousand for micro-cut. If you shred medical records or business files, the extra cost of micro-cut is usually worth it.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is a cross-cut shredder secure enough?

For most household paper, a P-4 cross-cut shredder is a reasonable choice. CHOICE advises aiming for level 3 or above, and Staples recommends cross-cut or micro-cut for personal data. Pick micro-cut if you want particles too small to reassemble realistically.

How big are cross-cut pieces?

It varies by model. Fellowes lists 5/32 x 1-1/2 in (4 x 38 mm) on the 79Ci, Bonsaii lists 5 x 25 mm on the C169-B, and CHOICE says cross-cut pieces are usually 2.7 to 6.9 mm wide and 11 to 52 mm long.

Is cross-cut P-3 or P-4?

Either. Fellowes groups cross-cut machines at P-3 to P-4. The P-level depends on particle area: under DIN 66399, P-3 allows up to 320 mm² and P-4 up to 160 mm².

Cross-cut or strip-cut for home?

Cross-cut. Strip-cut leaves long ribbons, about 36 to 39 per page, and Fellowes rates it only P-1 or P-2. Cross-cut is the usual minimum for personal documents.

Do cross-cut shredders need oil?

Yes. Fellowes says cross-cut and micro-cut cutters need oil and strip-cut models don’t. Oil when you empty the bin, or as often as your manual says.

Can cross-cut shredders take CDs?

Some can. Fellowes lists CDs for the 79Ci and 99Ci, and Bonsaii lists them for the C169-B and C149-C. Feed one at a time through the CD slot if there is one.
