Best Small Paper Shredder for Home Use

For small spaces, the best shredder is slim, light and still secure: our top pick is the Aurora AU870MA, a P-4 micro-cut machine about 7 inches deep. Small shredders trade bin size and run time for footprint, so they suit a few envelopes at a time rather than big clear-outs.

Bonsen S3101 8-Sheet Cross-Cut

Bob Vila picked this small Bonsen as its best shredder for home use: an 8-sheet P-4 cross-cut that sits on a 4-gallon basket and is only about 7.5 inches deep. It is a Budget-tier machine for mail and bills.

Why it stands out

  • P-4 cross-cut (brand-stated) at a Budget-tier price.
  • Takes credit cards, staples and clips.

Short on floor space?

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Measure under the desk

Check height as well as depth: the small models here run from about 13.5 to 17.5 inches tall.

02

Mind the bin style

Many small shredders sit on a wastebasket; you lift the cutting head to empty it. Consumer Reports notes that exposes the blades, so unplug first.

03

Shred little and often

Small machines may run only 3 to 5 minutes before a long rest. A few sheets a day suits them better than a monthly marathon.

Honest note

Small shredders are short-session machines. The models here run 3 to 5 minutes before resting, and their bins hold about 4 gallons. If you clear boxes of files, see our heavy-duty picks instead.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is the smallest good paper shredder?

Among the shredders we cover, the GBC ShredMaster PX08-04 is the lightest at 7.7 lb, and the Aurora AU870MA and Bonsen S3101 are the slimmest at about 7 to 7.5 inches deep. The AU870MA is the only one of those rated P-4 micro-cut.

Are small shredders secure enough?

They can be. The AU870MA and Fellowes LX41 are rated P-4 micro-cut by their brands. The PX08-04 is P-3, which CHOICE still considers an acceptable minimum, but it will not take credit cards.

How long can a small shredder run?

Usually a few minutes. GBC lists about 3 minutes for the PX08-04, Fellowes 5 minutes on and 30 off for the LX41, and Bonsen 5 on and 40 off for the S3101.

Do small shredders take credit cards?

Most here do: the AU870MA, LX41 and S3101 list credit cards. GBC does not list them for the PX08-04.

Is a wastebasket-style shredder safe?

It works, but you lift the cutting head to empty it, which Consumer Reports notes exposes the blades. Unplug it first and keep it out of reach of children, as CPSC advises for all shredders.

Can a small shredder sit on a desk?

Most are floor machines that sit on their own basket. Choose one with a footprint that fits under your desk, and keep it where children and pets can’t reach the slot.
