Best Micro-Cut Paper Shredder for Home Use

For most homes, the best micro-cut shredder is one rated P-4 or P-5 that also runs long enough for a real clear-out: our top pick is the Aurora AU1210MA. Micro-cut turns a page into hundreds or thousands of tiny particles instead of a few hundred cross-cut pieces. Under the DIN 66399 standard, a P-4 particle may be at most 160 mm² and a P-5 particle at most 30 mm².

Who each one suits

Specifications are each brand’s own; notes draw on manufacturers’ manuals and independent reviews. We have not tested or used these shredders ourselves.

Best micro-cut overall#1

Aurora AU1210MA 12-Sheet Micro-Cut

The AU1210MA covers what most households need in one machine: micro-cut particles at the P-4 level, a 12-sheet feed, and up to 60 minutes of continuous running, so a big clear-out rarely stops for a cool-down. It also takes credit cards, CDs, staples and small paper clips.

Why it stands out

  • Micro-cut 4 x 12 mm particles, rated P-4 by Aurora.
  • Up to 60 minutes of continuous running, unusual at a Mid-range price.
  • Auto-reverse anti-jam system and indicator lights for overheat, overload and a full bin; Bob Vila named it its best overall shredder.

Run timeUp to 60 min continuous

ShredsPaper, cards, CDs, staples, small clips

Good fit if

  • You want micro-cut security without stepping up to an office-class machine.
  • You shred in long sessions a few times a year as well as day-to-day mail.
  • You still have CDs or old cards to destroy.

Skip it if

  • You have toddlers who could reach it: Bob Vila found it top-heavy and warned about tipping.
  • Space is tight: it stands about 19 inches tall and weighs around 22 lb.
  • You want to load a stack and walk away — it is hand-fed only.

Aurora calls it “ultra-quiet” but publishes no decibel figure, and Bob Vila measured about 77 dB from two feet away, louder than most machines in its roundup. If noise matters most, see the Fellowes Powershred 79Ci, which Fellowes rates at 54 dB.

Best P-5 security#2

Aurora AU1060MA P-5 Micro-Cut

The AU1060MA is the high-security pick: Aurora rates its micro-cut at P-5, a step beyond the P-4 of most home shredders, and still lists a 60-minute run time and a 6-gallon bin. CNN Underscored named it best overall.

Why it stands out

  • P-5 micro-cut, the highest security level among the shredders we cover.
  • Up to 60 minutes of continuous running.
  • Auto-reverse anti-jam and indicator lights for overheat, overload, open door and full bin.
Cut & securityMicro-cut, P-5 (2 x 12 mm)
Sheets per pass10 sheets
Run timeUp to 60 min continuous
Bin6 gal
ShredsPaper, cards, small clips (no CDs)

Good fit if

  • You shred medical records, tax returns or client files and want the smallest particles.
  • You also want long sessions.

Skip it if

  • You shred CDs or DVDs — not supported.
  • You want casters that lock: CNN Underscored noted they don’t.

Aurora’s own pages list the particle as 5/64 x 15/32 in on one page and 3/32 x 15/32 in on another; both are fine particles for home use.

Best jam-proof micro-cut#3

Fellowes Powershred LX210

The LX210 brings Fellowes’ jam-proof micro-cut design to a 16-sheet machine with a 20-minute run time. It suits a busy home office that wants smaller particles than cross-cut without the size of the LX220.

Why it stands out

  • 16-sheet micro-cut, 4 x 12.7 mm, rated P-4 by Fellowes.
  • 20 minutes on, 15 minutes off.
  • SafeSense, auto-reverse and an IntelliBar display for run time and bin level.

  • You shred CDs — not listed.
  • You want a quiet machine: Fellowes rates it at 65 dB.

HP MC145 Micro-Cut

A 14-sheet micro-cut shredder with a drop-down bin, made under license by Royal. It is a capacity step up at a Mid-range price, with one caution: the brand publishes no P-level, and its run-time figures conflict.

Why it stands out

  • 14 sheets per pass, micro-cut 4.3 x 12 mm.
  • Auto stop on jams and a paper-access sensor.
  • Takes credit cards and staples.
Cut & securityMicro-cut (4.3 x 12 mm)

Good fit if

  • You want more sheets per pass than budget micro-cut models.

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Check the P-level, not the label

“Micro-cut” can mean P-4 or P-5 depending on the model. Fellowes, for example, uses the word on machines at both levels, so read the rating for the exact model.

02

Feed fewer sheets

Smaller particles mean more cutting per page. Bonsaii advises feeding about 70% of the rated maximum, which matters even more on micro-cut machines.

03

Oil it on schedule

Fellowes says cross-cut and micro-cut cutters need oil, for example when you empty the bin. Follow your manual and never use an aerosol.

Honest note

Micro-cut costs you capacity and speed: a micro-cut machine usually takes fewer sheets per pass than a cross-cut machine of the same size, and some, like the AU1060MA, will not take CDs. If you mostly shred junk mail, a P-4 cross-cut shredder may suit you better.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is micro-cut worth it for home use?

If you shred medical bills, tax records or anything with full account numbers, many people find the smaller particles worth it. HSM describes P-4 as suited to particularly sensitive data and P-5 to information that must stay secret. For everyday junk mail, P-4 cross-cut is usually enough.

What is the difference between micro-cut and cross-cut?

Both cut across the paper, but micro-cut makes much smaller pieces. Fellowes lists 5/32 x 1-1/2 in cross-cut pieces on its 79Ci and 5/32 x 1/2 in micro-cut pieces on its LX models; Fellowes counts 1,250 or more micro-cut particles per sheet.

Is micro-cut the same as P-5?

Not always. Fellowes’ buying guide links micro-cut with P-5, but many micro-cut home shredders, including most on this page, are rated P-4. Only the AU1060MA here is rated P-5 by its brand.

Can micro-cut shredders handle credit cards?

Most on this page take credit cards, fed one at a time. CDs are another matter: the AU1210MA takes them, while Aurora says the AU1060MA does not and Fellowes does not list them for the LX210.

Do micro-cut shredders jam more?

They do more cutting per sheet, so overfeeding is more likely to stall them. Feeding below the rated maximum, removing large clips and oiling the cutters as the manual says all help. Fellowes markets its LX models with a jam-proof system, though Popular Mechanics still jammed an LX220 by overloading it.

Is P-4 enough for identity theft protection?

For most household paper, P-4 is a sensible standard: SEM describes it as suitable for commercial data covered by laws such as HIPAA and FACTA. P-5 adds margin for medical or legal records. No shredder level makes paper impossible to reassemble.
